“a Rose for Emily, ” “Young Goodman Brown” and “Good Country People, ”

Isolation: Loneliness from Society The time moves on for all people. If we cannot come to terms with that, bad things can happen. A short story, â€Å"A Rose for Emil,† by William Faulkner, was first published on April 30, 1930. William Cuthbert Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi, on September 25, 1897. He is one of the greatest writers in America and obtained Nobel Prize laureate. As he grew up in New Albany, Mississippi, the Southern society influenced to him.Through his works such a Sartoris (book, 1931), The Sound and The Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (poem, 1930), The Sanctuary (1931), and A Famle (1954), he depicted chronologically the decaying Southern society. In other words, he mainly pointed out the vice of the southern high society and the pursuit to create the universal humanity. (Meyer 83) Nathaniel Hawthorne, an America author of â€Å"Young Goodman Brown,† born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts, grew up in a very strict Puritan family, whic h is where his inspiration came from.In addition, in most of Hawthorne's short stories, he developed the stories in similar settings in time and characters. The author described that time setting is the seventeenth century in New England, especially, Salem, his hometown. Even though he criticized the Puritanism, he was fully a Puritan. â€Å"Good Country People† is a short story written by Flannery O'Connor. Born in Savannah, Georgia, on March 25, 1925, Mary Flannery O'Connor was a female southern writer who wrote two novels and thirty-two short stories that are mainly in Southern Gothic style and relied heavily on regional setting and grotesque characters (Ditsky 3).Flannery O`Connor`s short stories mainly centers around the author`s characteristics as a Southern writer and her treatment of religious themes based on her Catholicism set in the Protestant South. These authors, William Faulkner, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Flannery O’Conner, had common critical perspectives in religion and region, and they developed the stories in similar tones. In the stories: â€Å"A Rose for Emily,† â€Å"Young Goodman Brown† and â€Å"Good Country People,† all of the main characters experience isolation from the society. To begin, William Faulkner's â€Å"A rose for Emily† shows the reader about lonely woman.Emily, the protagonist, has fallen down the social ladder and cannot recognize that time is moving forward, meaning that everything is changing. In her funeral, the beginning of the story from â€Å"No one save an old manservant – a combined gardener and cook-† had seen in at least ten years (Faulkner 84). Nobody has been to her house in ten years, except for her servant. This sets the framework for Emily's isolation in life by beginning with her funeral. When the city authorities go to her house for a tax problem, she tells them she is not subject to taxes in Jefferson even though Colonel Sartoris had been dead almost ten years.She finds her a lover Homer Barron, whom the reader can guess that he is homosexual. When she hears that he is going to leave her, she buys arsenic and kills him. After her death, the townspeople find the grey hair in the bed next to Homer's remains meaning she has been sleeping with the corpse. The reader can discover isolation in the beginning of part II: â€Å"So she vanquished them, horse and foot, just as she had vanquished their fathers thirty years before about the smell† (Faulkner 85). This moment gives the reader another message of Emily's isolation.Most reader can guess the reason for the smell: Homer Barron was dead. The last proof, â€Å"after her father's death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all,† (85) reiterates the fact that Emily is isolated. This quotation has two points; her father makes her isolation and Homer Barron isolates her mind, which seems to be what her father intended. There is n o getting around the fact that â€Å"A Rose for Emily† is a story about the extremes of isolation – by physical and emotional.This Faulkner classic shows us the process by which human beings become isolate by their families, by their community, by tradition, by law, by the past, and by their own actions and choices. In effect, this story takes a stand against such isolation, and against all those who isolate others. In the â€Å"Young Goodman Brown† by Hawthorne, the work centers around a young Puritan, lonely man, in New England, and his deal with the Devil. At the beginning of the story, even though his wife, Faith, tries to dissuade him, Goodman Brown, he leaves on the trip anyway and meets old man.When he follows him on a gloomy forest, he sees many people such as Goody Cloyse, pious woman, and the minister of the church and Deacon Gookin, who are also apparently on their way to the ceremony. Goodman Brown was Shocked; he swears that even though everyone els e in the world has gone to the devil, for Faith's sake he will stay true to God. However, he soon hears voices coming from the ceremony and thinks he recognizes Faith's voice. Faith ignores when he screams and has turned to evil. The next morning Goodman Brown return to Salem Village, and every person he passes seems evil to him.He does not trust anyone in his village. He lives the rest of his life in gloom and fear. This short story is famous for being representation of American Romantic literature. The reader can find just a few important quotes from the short story. In the forest Brown saw a mixture of pious and dissolute people, and it was strange to see that â€Å"the good shrank not from the wicked, nor were the sinners abashed by the saints† (331). Brown chose to see that all were evil and lost his chance at redemption when he chose to isolate himself and to â€Å"shrink from his Faith† and fellow man. By the sympathy of your human hearts for sin ye shall scent out all the places—whether in church, bedchamber, street, field, or forest—where crime has been committed, and shall exult to behold the whole earth one stain of guilt, one mighty blood spot† (332). Near the end of the story, Goodman Brown has seen the evil in every person, and it causes isolating of his life. In the story, the narrator poses an important question: â€Å"Had Goodman Brown fallen asleep in the forest, and only dreamed a wild dream of a witch-meeting? † (Meyer 333). The choice is dream or reality.Whatever the reader chooses to believe, Goodman Brown's own horrible doubts create a central theme of the tale (Fogel 21). Hawthorne’s mental and moral beliefs are revealed throughout â€Å"Young Goodman Brown. † Puritans believed that the fall of Adam was the inheritance of all men, and that redemption came only through Christ. Hawthorne came to believe that the fall was by human contrivance, that damnation is not inherited but chosen and is redeemable through human agency. (Adams 5) The devil reminds Brown about the past and the devil knows his father and grandfather from past encounters.Theme is hypocrisy and deception that would describe the devil's temptations and promises to Goodman Brown, his father, his grandfather, and anyone else. Other theme would be isolation because of the location where Goodman Brown is at which is a dark forest where he is all alone with no one in the area. The short story, â€Å"Good country people† by O'Connor, also has a character of isolation. This story starts in rural Georgia; Mrs. Hopewell runs her family farm with the help of tenants Mr. and Mrs. Freeman. Mrs. Hopewell's daughter, Joy, who got her leg cut off in an accident when she was a child.She now lives at home with her mother. Thirty-three-year-old Joy has earned a PhD in philosophy, but she does not seem to have much common sense. In an act of rebellion, she has changed her name to Hulga, and she lives in a st ate of annoyed anger at her mother and Mrs. Freeman. A Bible salesman comes to the door, claiming his name is Manly Pointer, and manages to get invited to dinner. He and Hulga make a date to have a picnic together the next day. That night Hulga imagines with her superior mind and education that she is in control and that she will seduce him.However, the next day by the time they have climbed into a barn loft, Manly manages to persuade her to take off her glasses and then her wooden leg which he packs in a suitcase, between a â€Å"Bible† which is really a box with liquor and pornographic cards in it. As Manly leaves Hulga without her false leg, he tells her that he collects prostheses from the disabled. She is shocked to realize that he is not â€Å"good country people. † Hulga, main character, is always trying to escape from the Southern social conventions and stereotypes in which her mother and Mrs. Freeman are immersed.Hulga is self-assured about her self and her vi sion of life and people from a nihilistic and atheist point of view; as she says in this story, â€Å"If science is right, then one thing stand firm: Science wishes to know nothing of nothing. Such is after all the strictly scientific approach to nothing. we knows it by wishing to know nothing of nothing. † (381) She is also very proud of her education with a Ph. D. in Philosophy. Hulga rejects any possibility of mixing with the people around her. She creates a condition of self-isolation in her life. â€Å"You poor baby. it's just as well you don't understand. (389) The young woman fails to see that there is much more to life than what you can learn in a book. Due to a heart condition, however, Hulga is forced to remain home on the farm, instead of being in an academic setting where her education would be recognized and encouraged. This attitude that she is above most other people isolates Hulga from everyone around her. Hulga does not understand herself as innocent; indeed , she considers herself quite experienced because her education has given her access to philosophers such as Nietzsche, whose words she underlines with a blue pencil: â€Å"science wishes to know nothing of nothing. (Ditsky 3) These short stories have lonely characters, â€Å"Emily,† â€Å"Goodman Brown,† and â€Å"Hulga,† who avoid from their family or society. These stories' authors teach the reader that they can find isolation in processing when the main characters fight against their life. There is one thing common ground between them. That is a tragic fate at the end of their isolation from the world. However, if they think a little differently, the result does not have to be tragic. Thus, the reader can learn a lesson from these stories that we need to stay positive and not become a part of the isolation.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Essay

Many people are affected by genetic disorders every day. Abnormalities in one’s DNA are what cause a genetic disorder. These disorders could be as little as a mutation in a single gene. In another case, they could be as severe as having an extra chromosome, or taking away a chromosome. Genetic disorders are present from birth, but they may not be visibly seen until a later age. Some mutations could be heritable, or from your parents genes. Some forms of cancer can be inherited form a parent. Although, in most cases, these mutations are new changes to the DNA. â€Å"All humans have the same basic set of genes†. This means that everyone has the probability that they could get a genetic disorder. The thing that makes us different is the genetic sequence. There are many different types of genetic disorders. A few of them are: Angleman syndrome, Hemophilia, Sickle-cell disease, Neurofibromatosis, Cri du chat, and Down syndrome. People are born with these diseases and have to face many challenges every day to live with these genetic mutations. This essay is going to specifically cover one genetic disorder called Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a genetic disorder that occurs in the nervous system. Each word in ALS briefly describes what the disorder is. Amyotrophic has two parts to it. The prefix â€Å"amyo† means muscular atrophy. Atrophy means to waste away, typically due to the degeneration of cells. The suffix â€Å"trophic† means that it is relating to feeding and nutrition. So to sum it up, amyotrophic means that the muscles have lost their nourishment. Lateral usually means the side of something. In this case, it means that the mutation is affecting the sides of the spine. The sides of the spine are where the nerves that nourish the muscles can be found. Sclerosis is the abnormal hardening of body tissue. In this case its referring to how the mutated part of the spinal cord develops hardened or scarred tissue, in place of healthy nerves. The mutation damages nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The damage caused by it, most of the time, leads to one’s death. After motor neurons die, the brain is unable to control muscle movement, and the victim becomes paralyzed. It targets the motor neurons that allow you to make voluntary movements and it effects your muscle strength. Voluntary movements are movements in which you control. These are movements that require you to think about the action in order for it to happen. For example, lifting you leg to kick a ball is a voluntary action. Involuntary actions do not require any thinking and some happen automatically, such as your heart beating, or breathing. There are many symptoms in that come along with ALS. Most of the symptoms do not occur unless people reach the age of 50. Although there have been some cases, where the symptoms occur in younger people. According to some studies, the first two muscles that are most often affected are the muscles that allow you to swallow and breathe. There can be many noticeable symptoms because your muscles get weaker. You may notice an increase in gagging, drooling, and choking. You may feel that you cannot lift your head up, because your neck muscles are weak. There are many physical tests that can be given to attempt to diagnose Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Certain physical tests could show muscle weakness in certain areas, weird walk or posture, and abnormal reflexes. There are tests that can be used to diagnose ALS. One method is taking a blood test, so that the doctors can rule out any other possible disease that it could be. Victims can also receive a spinal tap, a MRI, or even a family background check to see if there is any history of ALS in the family. There is one major problem with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Scientists and doctors have still not been able to find a permanent treatment for it. Although there is one medicine called riluzole that can slow down the symptoms, giving victims longer to live. Physical therapy and the use of braces, are non-medicinal ways of helping with the muscle weakness. There are many medications that can be used to help with specific symptoms of ALS. Since choking is common in someone with ALS, most people are hooked up to a tube and are fed through it. This is called a gastrostomy. A gastrostomy is when they make an opening in the stomach from the abdominal wall so they can put in food. This is obviously a surgical procedure. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is named after Lou Gehrig, who was a famous baseball player in 1930s. The French refer to it as Maladie de Charcot because the first recording of ALS was in 1869 by a French doctor named Jean-Martin Charcot. Stephen Hawking is one of the more famous people with ALS. He has had ALS since the start of his adult life, and he has been living with it for more than 50 years. Most people die from it three to five years after the symptoms become noticeable. This is why Stephen Hawking’s case is very special. It was just after his 21 birthday when he found out something was wrong. Yet he is still living and doing the most he can with his life. For example, being one of the smartest people on earth. People that live with ALS every day. Once the symptoms start to show, and or get serious, they are unable to care for themselves. They are usually taken care of by a family member or even a close friend. In some serious cases, victims must remain at the hospital because they are unable to eat and function without medical assistance. As mentioned previously, the victims sometimes have to be fed through a tube because they are unable to chew. Living with ALS is a very hard thing to do. It’s hard for the family members, friends, doctors, and most importantly, the victim.

They are there to give direction, set accountability and act as a critical friend. They also hire staff, review pay, and look after the curriculum. The head teacher is responsible for all the school, staff under him and for the pupils, their education and discipline. Academies have greater freedom than state run schools, as they have freedom from the local authority. They set their own pay and conditions for staff. The timetable can be changed and days set to what they think is best, and also the curriculum is not set in stone. Sometimes a faith leader can be in charge of the school. Head teacher They are responsible for all the pupils education, managing the staff, talking with governors, ofsted officials and other officials that visit a school. They are the main disciplinarian of a school. They also watch over the funds, health and safety. Deputy head or Assistant head When the head is away the deputy head will be in charge and carry out his roles. He is also responsible for anything delegated by the head teacher. He would normally teach in a classroom and oversee discipline. Make a tick sheet with different types of animals on it, so the child can tick off the animal as they see it. 2,3 Describe the way in which the activity promotes the development of literacy skills We go to the farm and on our way we talk about what we can see on the road which enhances the child’s literacy skills by naming objects and numeracy skills by counting objects. When at the farm, we can talk about each animal, feed them and pet them. You can find out if the child knows what some of the animals are used for on a farm. Get the child to ask questions. When you get home you can get the child to draw pictures and write what they have done for the day. Then when it is bedtime you can get the child to read the story they wrote, then use their imagination to imagine what each animal will do after a long day on the farm. 2. Understand the main features of the school curriculum 2.1 Explain the subjects, levels, and programmes of study within the national curriculum Each child is given a set of subjects that help them learn. These include English, Maths, Geography, History, PE, Design and technology, Music and Art. RE is provided, but they do not have to study this subject. Schools teach general studies like citizenship and foreign Languages which will help develop skills in life. Compulsory in Key stage 3 All subjects for early years with foreign language. Stage 4 is where a student starts their core subjects plus whichever they choose to study. Program of study  This is where you set out the topics needed to be taught for each subject. It also shows what they will learn in different periods of the school year. Each level is there to improve a child’s knowledge and understanding. 2.2 Give reasons for having a national curriculum Equal learning is provided amongst children. It sets out guidelines to the school and parents from the government. It gives aims and structure to a child’s learning. The levels are set throughout the child’s learning year. Everyone is able to follow progress of where a child should be in there learning path, by going online to the governments website for education . 2.3 Explain the reasons for the different key stages At the end of each stage a test is taken by pupils, before they move onto the next key stage. This assesses the level they have obtained during their current key stage and means that if they require any help it can be given to them. Without the key stages, it would be harder to know if a child is developing their learning capacity. 2.4 Explain the different levels of attainment within a key stage. There are 9 levels of attainment which have different performance levels, which are attributed to a child. This gives you an idea how you can help your child improve in certain aspects of their learning. This is also done via parents meetings, a book to show what they have done and through parents talking teachers if they think there is a problem. Pair / Group work – Is used to aid communication and promote ideas. It helps them in life skills when they leave school. Promotes confidence and assertiveness. Games – Used to teach children different learning skills, like flash cards, or scrabble. Discussion – More widely used these days as it helps shy children come out of their shells. No hands up – Helps children that are less likely to answer a question. The teacher will pick the child to answer instead. Think / pair / share system – Lets a child rehearse an answer with another before having to answer out loud ICT – A tool used in learning. It enables a child to see what a teaching is talking about. Children need to be taught about both sides of the internet. The dangers as well as the fun side. So they are taught information literacy as there are so many fake websites. Also the dangers of chat rooms. Tracking – Is a way of knowing what level a child has reached. The child is aware of their progress and must make 2 sub levels per year. This is a key strategy in the child’s schooling. 3.2 Explain a range of resources used within the classroom As you get older in schooling you will find you need many items, here is a few for each subject. Maths – Protractor, Calculator and compass English – Dictionary, Exercise book, Reading book, Geography – Globe, Atlas, School trip Sports – Balls, rackets, bats, sports equipment, sports gear. General – Pens, pencils, coloured pencils, ruler, scissors videos and tv and pc 3.3 Explain ways in which volunteers / support workers can contribute to the teaching and learning in a classroom Volunteers / support works can support the teacher, by always helping with photocopying, displays, helping individual children, getting the classroom  ready by putting the books out. Add any letters to children’s bags before they go home. Crowd control by moving the children around in an orderly fashion. They can help the children with their daily schooling by hearing them read, watching them write. Encouraging them to do things and give them more confidence to do things on their own. Mentoring and 1-1 work will help individuals get better at classwork. 3.4 The objective is to make a child of age 5 to 9 better at maths and English, by having a general game at the end of a day or weekly You will need 5 different sized plant pots and a ball and a score sheet. You can split the class in to four groups depending on how many teachers are in a class. Say you have 2 teachers and each teacher will take two groups, with 2 sets of resources. The child is asked an English or maths question, if they get it right they get to throw the ball into a plant pot, each plant pot has a number 1-5, 5 being for the smallest and hardest. If the child scores then its put on the score sheet for that team. As the children get used to the game, they can then play it in smaller groups with a question sheet to guide them, then at the end, they can add up the scores. If the school has houses then the points could be used as a class total and collated to see who the top class is. The game can be extended for use with other subjects. You can also use a spin wheel with different questions attached and the child gets to spin the wheel then has to answer the questions. See pic . 3.5 Explain how the activity can support teaching and learning I feel by doing this game it gives a child a goal, as they want to have a go at potting the ball and scoring points. It will give them a different fun learning experience that they could not only play in the classroom but at home too. A child might not like a subject this is a fun way of getting a child to work and learn and a new way for the teacher to show how fun subjects can be. 3.6 cannot answer at the moment as I cannot test it. Roderigo and Othello Essay The film adaptation of the play Othello by William Shakespeare is a very successful movie tie-in of this piece of classic literature that has been around for decades. Othello is one of Shakespeare’s renowned masterpieces, a love story which ends up as a tragedy. Although it is said that a truly faithful adaptation of a novel or a work in a different medium is not really possible, this movie gives a significant example of an adaptation that gives a fairly faithful reproduction of the play’s storyline. In Act I Scene 1 of the play, the first scene shows Roderigo and Iago arguing about the former’s failure in winning Desdemona’s heart despite Iago receiving a substantial amount from Roderigo, and that now, alas, Othello and Desdemona have gotten married. In the movie, this scene appears later on as the process of intersecting is employed. The first few scenes of the film portray a seemingly illicit tryst which takes place in the night, a court meeting of leaders, and a marriage between a white woman and a black man which is sealed with a kiss. It is only after these sequences are presented that the argument between Iago and Roderigo is shown, that is, after initially establishing the background of why the argument between them came about. Intersecting is also seen in the way Iago and Othello are shown in the film as conniving to kill both Desdemona and Cassio. This is further dramatized when they seal their partnership with a blood compact as illustrated in the movie a few moments before Othello promotes Iago to become his lieutenant. Somehow, this sequence also hints at the possible homosexual tendencies of Iago – as he says the lines: â€Å"I am your own forever† while glancing lovingly at Othello, thereby giving the viewer an idea of the reasons behind Iago’s actions. And then again, towards the end of the film, when Othello has already been disarmed, Cassio is shown secretly handing over a knife to his former master, perhaps giving him a way to escape his inopportune fate. In a way, this just demonstrates that Cassio is indeed a loyal servant of Othello, which the latter realizes quite late, because of the misplaced trust which he establishes with Iago. But then, again, this only gives Othello the resolve to use this weapon to end his life because of what he did to his wife. On the other hand, Act I Scene 2 depicts Iago warning Othello that Brabanzio may propose a divorce, followed by Cassio’s arrival to inform Othello that he is being summoned by the Duke, and then the confrontation scene between Brabanzio and Othello. The movie adaptation resorts to the process of borrowing this time, as these scenes are shortened, and somehow compressed, but still altogether included. The presentation was altered in some way, and yet the essence of this sub-plot was captured in a short screen time of approximately 2 minutes. The same is notable in Act II Scene 1 when a storm supposedly takes place which facilitates the defeat of the Turks. The troops at Cyprus were getting worried because of Othello’s delayed return, and this is highlighted in the play. In the movie, however, these scenes are downplayed, condensed and merely narrated, yet still included in the plot. The apprehensiveness of Desdemona about the delayed return of her husband was not much felt, and yet the beginnings of Iago’s plot to create a tapestry of lies around Cassio and Desdemona’s possible relationship was given more emphasis. This somehow served to draw attention to Othello and Desdemona’s relationship and how from a very ideal union, it soured to become a misfortune. Some other ideas which were borrowed from the original play and incorporated into the movie adaptation were Desdemona’s handkerchief and how it became the object of jealousy, the foreboding song â€Å"Willow† and Othello’s fit of epilepsy. Alternatively, in the last scene of Act I, Brabanzio relates his dilemma to the Duke about his daughter being stolen from him with the use of witchcraft, pointing to Othello as the person who committed this act. Othello is given the chance to explain, which is later on confirmed by Desdemona herself. Thus, Othello’s marriage becomes justified and the explanation narrated by the accused was well-taken by the Duke. After arriving at a resolution to their squabble, Othello is sent to Cyprus on a mission, and Desdemona requests the Duke to allow her to join her husband having been just married. All these sequences are displayed in the movie version and are accurately presented as the film further unfolds, and can easily be described as illustrating fidelity of transformation. Likewise, the scenes pertaining to Iago and the numerous ways by which he portrayed his role of the antagonist in this movie are well-represented. The actor who played the character of Iago was definitely hateful as the traitor friend to Roderigo and Othello, an effective manipulator of people, and an outstanding liar to almost everyone in the cast. Iago definitely abhorred Othello, but in both the play and the film, the underlying reason for this hatred is not delved upon and up until the end, Iago does not apologize for his misdeeds. Although reference to Iago’s suspicions about Othello’s possible involvement with his wife Emilia are left out and never tackled, as well as Iago’s secret lustful desires for Desdemona as cited in the play, the main plot pertaining to Othello and Desdemona’s relationship and the complications that transpire, was truthfully demonstrated and adhered to. Fidelity of transformation is also seen in the way Act II Scene 3 is presented in the movie since all the essential scenes in the play are also recounted from the time Cassio assumes guardship at Cyprus while Othello consummated his marriage to Desdemona, to the brawl with Roderigo, up to the time Cassio is stripped off his rank after engaging in a duel with Governor Montano. Iago’s soliloquys were also retained, further rendering the film as a precise reproduction of this classic literary piece. It is also noticeable that the clown in Act III Scene 1 and the whole of Scene 2 were dropped, but since the main plot about Othello’s love story was still retained, it did not have a significant effect on the main storyline. From Act III Scene 3 up to the last act and scene, the complications of Othello’s jealousy over the imagined relationship of his wife Desdemona with his lieutenant Cassio are gradually revealed and given more weight. It is apparent that the director of the film wanted to focus on the tragedy in the story more than any other of the play’s sub-plots, hence, more than half of the movie’s running time was devoted to the conflict building up – conflict based on the context of â€Å"man against man† and â€Å"man against himself†, up until the story’s climax and gloomy ending. Othello’s jealousy was more imagined than real but it was lamentable because he allowed Iago to exploit and manipulate his thoughts and feelings for Desdemona, which was effectively portrayed and delivered to the viewer in this film. As a whole, the movie version of Othello was a success as an adaptation due to the use of different types of approaches in its presentation. The essential portions of the play were retained, and the translations and transposition of scenes and sequences did not affect the plot so much because the story’s progression was clear and crisp, and the original dialogues retained for the most part. The plot of the movie adhered to Othello and Desdemona’s love story in the play, which was captured as poignantly as it should have been staged before a live audience. With this trend of transforming the play into a more accessible and readily available type of media catering to the mass audience, it will not be surprising to see more such adaptations in the offing.
